University of North Carolina School of the Arts Summer Intensive
Given the ongoing public health concerns and the safety of our campers, parents, faculty, and staff due to the pandemic, the School of Art has reached a decision about an alternative virtual program for Summer Arts and Design Intensive 2021. We anticipate that the online registration could begin in late March or early April. Please check this site for further updates as we continue to develop various digital-based virtual studio courses and artistically engaged programs for our campers.

Studio Classes: Online and Live!!
Online and live studio classes offer first-year college-level artmaking experiences by the UNCG art faculty. Each studio class is 3 hours and students can register for one course per session in the morning and the afternoon. Each evening, students engage in a three-hour self-guided studio session with peers and camp staff. We keep our studio class relatively small, with a maximum of 15 students per course. The small class allows for more focused instruction and professional mentoring from the instructor. It also helps students experience attentive art project development. During the week, the campers can also join various art-related activities, art gallery tours, and artist talks with inspiring visiting artists, museum curators, and camp staff. Students need a digital device of any form that has internet access because we meet, learn, and have fun virtually! Mobile phones, tablets, notebooks, desktop computers, etc. will work and NO software or apps are required to purchase for the camp.

Digital Photography & Editingby Robert RoseThe photography course will consist of the essential workings and manipulation of photography using graphic design techniques. Students will begin the intensive course by working through how to turn off automatic features on their cameras and how to shoot in a manual through a pairing of independent and guided exercises. Students will be taking their photos and learning how to use graphic design approaches ranging from beginning to advanced to work through various student-chosen prompts and project goals. It is preferred that students have access to a DSLR or Digital Camera with manual features that allow for manual adjustment of aperture and shutter speed. However, we can work with students who have phones that take high-quality photographs that are stable enough to manipulate without the images breaking apart and coming out blurry. Accommodations and flexibility will be taken into account based on student needs and outcomes.
Drawing in Digitalby Prof. Bryan EllisThis virtual workshop explores the fundamentals of drawing and expands traditional skills through varied studio practices. Participants investigate the intersection between drawing and collage, incorporating diverse media to create and convey ideas. The materials available to participants to express themselves include paper, ink, graphite, print media, image fragments, and found objects. Artworks will emphasize the development of new skills and construction methods. Participants in this workshop will not only benefit from an opportunity to hone their interests as artists but appreciate the opportunity to engage in an evolving visual dialogue steeped in a rich history.
Time-Based Mediaby Prof. Lee WaltonTraditional artworks are often very still and don't move. Time-based art and unfolds as the clock ticks forward. This course will experiment with time-based art forms that span the digital world to real-life experiences, ranging from video and social media to objects to be worn, audio walks, and baking cookies.
Visual Storytelling in Animationby Prof. Dan HaleFrom the moment the first painting appeared on a cave wall over 30,000 years ago, humans have been telling stories using visual art. But why do we do it, and how do the best storytellers do it so well? Over the course of the week, we will look for answers to these questions and more as we walk through the process of getting ideas out of our heads and onto the screen. We'll begin with concept art and character design, then write a short script, draw out our storyboards, and finally finish with timed animatic that brings them to life. Students are welcome to draw either on paper or digitally but will need to have access to a camera (smartphone or tablet is fine) to take pictures of their drawings and a video editing app/software to assemble their images into an animatic. DaVinci Resolve is a free software option for anyone using a PC or Mac, but iMovie or an equivalent app will work just as well. |

Safety
During the virtual camp, UNCG art education pre-service teachers work as camp counselors providing organized supervision and assistance to help the students throughout the daily instructional schedules and art activities in Online and Live sessions.
At the UNCG Summer Arts and Design Intensive program, students will experience self-motivated artistic journeys to expand their creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Under the exceptional leadership and guidance from the artist-faculty of the School of Art and Art Education NC Professional Teaching Licensure Program, students will grow as potential artists and critical visual consumers. Each studio class offers limited seats to provide intensive and vibrant instruction.
In the case of the on-campus overnight program staying in the UNCG residence halls, all students will be under the supervision of our professional overnight staff. Experienced camp counselors will be assigned to groups of students during the week and will closely monitor all aspects of campus life.
Health Care
Due to the provision mode of a Virtual Camp, we do not require a signed Medical Information Form this year.
Camp Policies
- Cell Phone Policy
For a variety of reasons students may have cell phones but they must be turned off and put away during studio classes and enrichment events, this means cell phones can only be out during lunch and when waiting to be picked up. Cell phones can cause distractions, which cause accidents (which we would like to avoid). We want the students to get the maximum learning experience without a distraction.
- Music Policy
Music while working on artwork will be up to each instructor to decide.
- Bullying Policy
Bullying is when one or more people exclude, tease, taunt, gossip, hit, kick, or put down another person with the intent to hurt them. Bullying happens when a person or group of people try to exercise power over another person and use this power to get their way at someone else's expense. Bullying is hurtful regardless of what form it takes. In extreme cases, it can escalate until people are physically harmed. A student may be expelled from the program without a refund for any disrupting behavior that endangers or detracts from the positive art experience of other students. Our staff takes all instances of bullying seriously. We train our staff to promote good communication between students and staff so that everyone is comfortable alerting us about bullying.
- Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones, computers, and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS, Text, and apps, or online in social media, forums, or gaming where people can view, participate in, or share content. Cyberbullying includes sending, posting, or sharing negative, harmful, false, or mean content about someone else. It can include sharing personal or private information about someone else, causing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful or criminal behavior.
The most common places where cyberbullying occurs are:
-
- Social Media, such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Tik Tok
- Text messaging and messaging apps on mobile or tablet devices
- Instant messaging, direct messaging, and online chatting over the internet
- Online forums, chat rooms, and message boards, such as Reddit
- Online gaming communities
